Ready, Set, Snack 2017

Ready, Set, Snack is an initiative put on to help curb student hunger across Cayman's schools, by encouraging the public to help us by donating healthy snacks. For the second year in a row, the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman has partnered with Feed Our Future to give students who unfortunately are in situations where lunch is not available, a chance to eat something nutritional. It has been stated and reported that children who are hungry at school cannot concentrate, resulting to set backs in their education. With this Snack drive, we, the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman and Feed Our Future will be helping the upcoming generation get the food needed to further their education.

Hearts and Homeruns!

Posted by Ajoni Ambersley on Feb 21, 2017

It's our 7th annual Hearts and Homeruns! Join us at 2pm, on field 4 of the Field of Dreams for an afternoon of kickball fun! Kickball teams will be created by pooling together those attending who want to compete and splitting up into equal teams.

The cost is $10 per person and includes a plate of food. There will be some beverages and ice there but please BYOB, coolers will be available to keep said beverages at a refreshingly cool temperature.  Don't forget to bring extra money as some amazing raffle prizes will be up for grabs! Raffle tickets will be 1 for $5 or 3 for $10.

Along with the raffle tickets, you'll be able to purchase WHAMMY'S to challenge the opposing teams for just $1!  The way WHAMMY'S work is you can purchase one to affect one person on the opposing team to last an entire inning.  A couple of examples of the WHAMMY'S would be having to use your non-primary foot to kick the ball, or having to spin around several times before kicking the ball. Yes there is an opportunity to DOUBLE WHAMMY, or even TRIPLE WHAMMY some people! Be as creative as you want!

I hope you all come out and have fun supporting your Rotafam!  Guests are more than welcome to attend so feel free to invite everyone you know!

Funds raised will go towards club admin (for things like covering the costs associated with this event).

A special thank you goes out to the Cayman Islands Little league for sponsoring this fun filled day!

Nigeria reclassified as polio-endemic

Posted by Ajoni Ambersley on Sep 29, 2016
Nigeria reported three cases of wild poliovirus in the northeastern state of Borno in August of this year. Following the World Health Organization’s confirmation of these cases, the country returned to the list of polio endemic countries. The other polio endemic countries are Afghanistan and Pakistan.

These are the first cases detected in the country since July 2014, and while this news is disappointing for all Rotary members, we are confident that Nigeria can defeat polio. Rotary provided $500,000 to assist immediately with the outbreak response, and an emergency response plan has already been put into action in coordination with our partners. Large-scale vaccination campaigns are ongoing across five countries in the Lake Chad basin to counter the outbreak.

Despite these new cases, there has been significant progress toward ending polio in Nigeria, the rest of the African continent and globally in recent years.

As recently as 2012, Nigeria accounted for more than half of all polio cases in the world; however, thanks to quality vaccination campaigns and surveillance, as well as political commitment, the country has made significant progress. Furthermore, the new cases were detected due to ongoing efforts to strengthen surveillance, especially in insecure areas.

We have proven strategies to stop new outbreaks quickly, even in insecure regions or areas made vulnerable by conflict, such as South Sudan and Syria. These strategies will also overcome the outbreak in Nigeria.

Rotary is committed to the eradication of polio, and we will continue to support our members, particularly those in Nigeria-who have worked so hard to help the country end polio. With your help, we can ensure that there is no remaining home for the virus.

BPB Update: Walkers Charity Committee Sponsorship

Posted by Ajoni Ambersley on Sep 28, 2016

On behalf of The Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman, we would like to thank the Walkers Law Firm Charity Committee for sponsoring our Brown Paper Bag Project!

This generous donation will be used to purchase lunches for an average of 20 clients of the Department of Community Rehabilitation, who is a part of the mental health court system in the Cayman Islands. On the evening prior to court, Members of RCGC meet to decorate bags with inspirational messages and pack lunches.

Some clients do not have access to a healthy meal on regular basis, so each month these lunches are delivered to the Department of Rehabilitation for distribution at court.

#RotaDeed for February 2016

#RotaDeed for February 2016

This year for World Peace and Conflict Resolution Month (February 2016), we at the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman are inviting you to help in spreading the word about world-wide peace, togetherness and the action of giving back.

How do we do this you ask? We would love for everyone to do something kind (a good deed) for another person during the month of February and post about it via social media while asking a friend to do the same. We will call this a #RotaDeed.

Happy New Year All!

It has been some time since we have posted an update about the activities of RCGC. It has truly been a phenomenal journey for our club and I would like to share a few updates about our growth as an organization.

RCGC Turns 9

First of all, a very happy birthday to our very own RCGC! We have made it past nine years as of December 15th! This for me was an inspirational day having had the pleasure of being a part of the beginning and continuation of our organization. We celebrated at Breezes by the Bay (our original meeting spot). I remember my first meetings at Breezes by the Bay and the foreign concept of bringing like minded individuals to the same place every Thursday in a round table. Look at how far we have come!

Membership Growth & Impact
Over the course of the years, we have had over 104 prospective members and guests! If each individual helped five people each month over the past nine years; we would have helped over 14,000 people. Small Actions make great impact!

Fundraising & Service
We have provided over $20,000 in school supplies to children in need over the past four years alone. We have painted homes and cleaned up beaches and parks and have helped many charities and causes. We continue to show our love for the NCVO Foster Home and the wealth of support it provides to the community. We also continue; blood drives, fundraising to end polio and our award winning Brown Paper Bag Project. With our determination to ensure the betterment of our community as a driving force, there is no job too small for Rotaract and there is no task too large.

When I look at the last 9 relatively short years, I am amazed to see the growth of our past presidents, directors and members; whom have become leaders in the community and Partners and Managers in their careers. Without the service, fellowship and family of Rotaract who knows where we would have been. I know I have grown immensely throughout the last 9 RCGC years.

Our journey has not been easy and I am grateful for every Member, Director and President who stuck with RCGC through thick and thin to ensure that this little but great organization has not just survived but thrived. And I know without a doubt, it will thrive for another 9 years and continue to grow to induct second and third generation Rotactors...Full circle indeed!

So, as I look back on the last 9 years, I can't help but to look forward to the future, to see what RCGC does for 2016 and many years to come. Keep a look out!

Happy New Year!

The Journey Continues!

Posted by Matthew Seales
Hello Fellow Rotaractors, Rotarians and Friends,

Three months in our new year and so many amazing things have happened! Africa has been Polio free for a year now and the so many amazing stories to share.

In our club we are not short of memorable moments from August; Vice President Pierre, Club Service Director Brooks and Public Relations Chair lead us in one of our most successful membership drives leading us with over 8 new guests and maybe more friends to hopefully join our ranks. And how did we celebrate it? With Drafting Games which was a LOAD of fun and of course every competition needs a winner.. Great Job to the team of Dir Renee, Member Rebecca, Guest Kwei and yours truly.

We also visited Cayman Brac and assisted with Basketball Games and Painted a community center.

Our School Supply-A-thon drive was an immense success we raised funds to help children with their school supplies for the year.

We continue to donate blood to assist with saving lives, come out and donate blood with us and save up to three lives.

In September we have Literacy and Education to look forward to and we will continue our year long projects such as Brown Paper Bag.

To my fellow Rotaractors; great work and let us continue to shine in our district in being the gift to our world.

YIRS,

Pres. Matt

Welcome to 2015 - 2016!

Posted on Jul 01, 2015
I would like to give you all a warm welcome to the Rotary year 2015 - 2016. First of all, allow me to introduce myself, my name is Hov.. Actually its just Matt. As this year's president, I have the pleasure of serving the community and our Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman or as we call it RCGC. The first thing I would like to do is introduce our Rotaract Board for the year.

As we start this new year, I would like to take a step back and look at the achievements of our past year such as School Supply-A-Thon, Brown Paper Bag Project, Meals On Wheels, Beach Clean Ups, and so many more... I look forward to continuing our annual projects:
School Supply-A-Thon,which has gotten off to a great start thanks to the gracious donation from Appleby! This year we aim to raise funds to donate to the Department of Children and Family Services, which will ensure students can have the necessary tools to learn and become better students.
Brown Paper Bag, which each month takes a meal to the Mental Health Court ensuring the attendees have at least one healthy meal with a positive message attached.

We are off to a fast start within the club as well; our annual boat cruise We On A Boat is scheduled for July 19th, the registration is open for Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Guests! Our Bi-Annual Club Survey has already kicked off and will close on July 18th with a Club Forum.

This organization is built on hard work, bringing out the best of ourselves, the desire to do better every time, and of course, fun...which we plan on having a lot of! A friend and amazing Rotaractor by the name of David Postic said "If you're not having fun you, you shouldn't be doing it." So let's go out, have fun and have an amazing Rotaract year!
Welcome to 2015 - 2016! Matthew Seales 2015-07-01 05:00:00Z 0

RCGC Training Day

Posted on Jan 16, 2015

On Saturday 17 January, Director Rosie planned an exciting day full of team building activities to strengthen the cohesiveness of RCGC members. The morning began with a power hour with the board members which allowed each person to identify their leadership personalities. This was followed by lunch as members of the club arrived for the evening portion of the day. After our bellies were filled, the rest of the afternoon consisted of group work, trust exercises and brainstorming activities. The day allowed us to reflect on our strengths and weaknesses as a club and as individuals. After training, the group moved to the informal portion of the day for happy hour at Sidebar, enjoying drinks, nibbles and each other's company.

"Brown Paper Bag" Project

Posted by Lauren Langlois on Aug 21, 2013

Image

The ‘Brown Paper Bag’ was first used by The Department of Community Rehabilitation (DCR) in 2010 to help assist those with mental health issues who are before the Mental Health Court by providing an incentive. Due to lack of funding and resources at times, DCR hasn't always been able to provide the incentive and thus the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman (RCGC) has agreed to take over and continue this initiative.

It was a great time spent telling stories, playing board games and dominoes as well as just chatting with the residents. There was even enough bun & cheese as well as a Caymanopoly game left over to be donated to the NCVO Children’s Foster Home.

This past March, RCGC decided to have another Car Boot Sale in order to raise funds for another worthy cause in our community. RCGC recognizes the need for activities outside of school for kids as they help to keep kids out of potential trouble and help build positive characteristics such as responsibility, etc. The funds from our 2012 Car Boot Sale were therefore donated to the John Gray High School Music Department to aid in the purchase and maintenance of instruments. There was tremendous support from members as well as the public and over $600 was raised to go towards the music department. On top of that, any donated items left over after the sale were donated to the Red Cross Thrift Shop, The Humane Society Thrift Shop as well as the Women’s Clinic.

The visit was an opportunity for the Rotaractors to spend some quality time with the foster kids as well as share in some Halloween treats. The vibrant group of children, ranging from five to sixteen years old, greeted the Rotaractors with great anticipation.  Club members handed out homemade Halloween treats and delicious candied apples. The children were more than happy to indulge in the sweets while spending time with the Rotaract members. RCGC’s Community Service director, Andrea Balderamos said, “It is always a great privilege to come to the NCVO and chat with the kids, most of the time we Rotaractors feel we get more out of the experience than the kids do. The theme for World AIDS Day 2008 is "leadership". This theme will continue to be promoted with the campaigning slogan, "Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise." Leadership was selected as the theme for World AIDS Day to encourage leaders at all levels to stop AIDS. Building on the 2006 theme of accountability, leadership highlights the discrepancy between the commitments that have been made to halt the spread of AIDS, and actions taken to follow them through. The theme empowers everyone from individuals to organisations to governments to lead in the response to AIDS.

The team has returned home with a number of exciting new initiatives for the Club and District 7020. Congrats to Rotaractors Navin and Tara for putting on a well-organized training event. Our partnership with the Cayman Islands Libraries is off to a fantastic start! This week (the week commencing Monday 21 July), Rotaractors from our club took a half hour out of their hectic work day to read stories to the children participating in the Set Sail to Reading summer program at the historic George Town Public Library. More than 10 Rotaractors/prospective members signed up to assist the librarians and a few even renewed those expired library memberships and took up the summer reading challenge. The Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman hosted a joint fellowship with our sister club, Rotaract Blue on 6 July 2008. The evening began with the now-infamous, Battle of the Sexes quiz competition, where members of the same sex came together to battle it out for the title of the Smarter Sex. After the ladies showed the guys a thing or two, we headed off on the Jolly Roger for a beautiful all-inclusive sunset cruise along Seven Mile Beach. The Grand Cayman clubs look forward to more joint fellowships with our sister club - if you have any suggestions or would like to get involved in planning fellowships get in touch with Club Service Director Martha or Rotaractor Matthew!

Forty Years of Service to the Global Community

story thumbnail

Dear Sir,

Every year, World Rotaract Week honors the chartering of the first club in North Carolina, USA, on 13 March 1968. This week, we celebrate 40 years of service to our global community.

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and are sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes us true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary. As one of Rotary's most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 7,000 clubs in about 163 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.

For the first time in the history of our islands, the Cayman Islands boasts two successful, thriving Rotaract Clubs - the Rotaract Club of Grand Cayman (sponsored by the Rotary Sunrise) and Rotaract Blue, Cayman Islands (sponsored by Rotary Central).

Guyana Jungle Camp Update

Posted by Victor Crumbley
Just an email to let you know that we arrived safely in Guyana and are having a wonderful time. The internet connection at our homestay host is a dial up connection so I can't log into the club website to send emails and would ask that you please send this on to the Club.

We arrived in Guyana on time at about 10:40pm on Thursday night and our hosts were waiting for us in the customs area! A few other Rotaractors were outside to greet us and we headed straight into town for registration for the Jungle Camp. The International Service Director gave us some "cookup" to eat, which is rice, blackeyed peas, chicken and salt beef cooked together in something nice. That evening we went straight to our homestay host took a well-needed shower and went to bed. The next morning our hosts had to check that we were alive - you do know that the two representatives from Cayman are the two professional sleepers of the Club and we remained true to form! We drove around Georgetown to do a few errands and met up with other local Rotaractors as well as Surinami Rotaractors. Georgetown is nothing like George Town but it is a vibrant and busy city with a large central market and bustling streets. We were the only identifiable tourists. I can only describe it as dynamic and pulsing with activity at all times of the day and night. We exchanged currency (US$1.00 = G$200) and bought some snacks for the road trip to camp. Perhaps ignorance is bliss, but it feels alot like my borough in London but about twenty degrees hotter!

The Lighthouse School, which caters to children with special educational needs, (SEN) is seeking additional aid from the general public for its school trip to Disney World. According to Deputy Principal, Olga Gourzon, the school wants to do something special for its students and a trip to Disney World is very appealing to them.

"This is an opportunity that the children would not otherwise get, due to their social background," Mrs Gourzon said.

According to the school's officials, they need to raise at least $30,000, but funds are slow in coming.

Rotary Sunrise invited Rotaractor Matthew Seales to be Honorary Sergeant at their breakfast meeting last week and he did a great job, the organisation said.

All Rotary clubs have Sergeants - a post where the individual appointed helps to control the meetings and often has a short session at the end of each meeting where he 'fines' members if they are late, if they take cell phone calls, forget their badges, if they are mentioned in the media or for a host of other reasons.
