On International Literacy Day, 8 September 2008, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Despite many and varied efforts, literacy remains an elusive target: some 774 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 75 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out. Our Club is involved in a number of literacy projects both in Cayman and abroad and decided to take a new direction this International Literacy Day!

In an effort to encourage those who do read to continue to do so and to socialize over the joy of words and books, we hosted our first Scrabble Night fundraiser! Where else, but surrounding by books at Books & Books at Camana Bay! Lots of goodwill was spread and better friendships forged and we had a great family-friendly evening. Due to the success of the event, we are considering a monthly league - continue to check our website for details and of course, drop Fundraising Chair Georgi Ann Jackman an email of encouragement! More photos will be posted to our facebook group. A great big thank you to the management and staff of Books and Books for their support!
